According to the Downtown CID, the sculpture will spell out the city of Columbia’s name in five-foot stainless steel letters with a globe representing the letter “O” in Columbia. The “O” will be eight feet in diameter and light up at night.

The globe will be covered in 11 important dates from the city’s history along with words submitted by residents to describe the local community. The art installation is part of the Downtown CID’s plan to add more art around Downtown Columbia.


Columbia Sculpture Design at Gateway Plaza

Each letter of “Columbia” is set to feature a different aspect of the community with text.

  • C – Courthouse Square
  • O – Globe outlining important dates and community words
  • L – Public Schools
  • U – Higher Education for Women
  • M – Healthcare
  • B – Transportation
  • I – Groundbreakers
  • A – Creative Community

The sculpture is set to be placed in downtown Columbia at Gateway Plaza which is at the corner of Broadway and Providence Rd.

A grand unveiling for the Gateway Plaza is scheduled for Nov. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
