Ramblewood Garden Club has awarded the May Yard of the Month to Judy Brey, who gardens in Cape Girardeau’s Historic District. Her front yard is planted with a curving line of free-formed pink “Hino gari” azaleas (Rhododendron) in front of a deep green boxwood (Buxus simpervirens) background. The front step is decorated with a potted arborvitae (Thuja) and pots of purple and violet pansies (Viola). The front door holds a circular wreath in shades of green and blue. Periwinkle (Vinca minor) forms a circular, carpeted bed enclosing the front plantings. Surrounding the house are mature trees including three large hard maple (Acer) trees, loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and hemlock (Conium masculatum) growing in the grassy yard area. The side yard displays a bed with nandina (Nandina domestica), pink “Rose Girard” azaleas, boxwood, spring flowering yellow daffodils (Narcissus), and a Leyland cypress (Cupressus x leylandi) for spring color and camouflage of the home air conditioning unit. A river birch (Betula nigra) also adds ads texture and variety. A perfect specimen saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana) provides spring drama with its pink blossoms. The back patio shares space with upright boxwood “Fastigiata,” potted ferns and pansies, and is surrounded with white spirea (Spiraea betulifolia), crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia), pink “Sarah Bernhardt” peony (Paeonia ) and several rosebushes which show blooms in the summer months. A large pink flowering crabapple tree (Malus) is centered in the backyard’s lush green lawn. The side yard is filled with perennial blue blooming Salvia, purple coneflowers (Echinacea), purple Phlox, daffodils, large crape myrtles and English boxwood, all combining to provide visitors an enjoyable stroll around the garden. Our congratulations go to Judy Brey for planting such an inviting and colorful garden palate, and for helping make Cape Girardeau a more beautiful place to live.
